What’s your goal in learning the violin as adults? Having one or two goals can be helpful to motivate you to practice.

Whenever I walk around with my violin case around campus where I work as a faculty member, people usually ask me whether what’s in my “backpack” or how cool my “backpack” is. I usually thank them and tell them that it’s the violin case.

Once they hear that it is the violin case, many seemed surprised as they never knew that I play the violin. I usually tell them that I have started from scratch as an adult learner. Once they heard that I have started in my adulthood, they were surprised.

One person asked me, “So what’s your goal in learning the violin at this age?”

My answer to that question was, “My goal is either to play in an orchestra or teach other adults later in life.”

That person nodded but did not say anything after that.

As adult learners, we have a lot of responsibilities that can become obstacles preventing us from practicing. Having one or two goals in mind at the beginning of the journey is very helpful in motivating us to learn and improve our musical skills. For example, I told my violin teacher when I started that I would like to join an orchestra or be a violin teacher later in life. She seems to like those goals and have been teaching me towards the goals that I have set for myself.

One thing to keep in mind is the goal can be a short or long term goal like learning a song that you always wanted to play or perform in a community gathering or a local church that you are a member.

So what’s your goal in learning the violin?
