Find Your Why – Learning A Violin As An Adult

Recently I have listened to an audiobook, Start with why by Simon Sinek, and I was thinking about my reasons of learning a violin as an adult learner. I have always wanted to learn a musical instrument but I did not tell my parents. I knew that I would not really get any supports with that. No one in my family plays any instruments. So I thought to myself, “Maybe music is not for me.” I chose to follow my other dream job — being a teacher. Now that I have an opportunity and resources to learn a musical instrument, I chose violin — the notoriously hard instrument.

Why violin!?

Many people have asked me to why I chose the violin. First of all, I did not really know that it is a hard instrument to learn when I started. My answer to them is that I like the sound of it — pure and simple. It is one of the instruments that has a range of low register (G string) to high one (E string), which is similar to human voice profile. In a way, the violin has been calling me to pick it up.

Why learning the violin as an adult!?

I have run this question in my head so many times and the reason is always the same — I want to inspire other adults to learn musical instruments. I posted my violin practice on YouTube – The Whole Bow Channel and this blog. In fact, one friend actually was inspired to learn the violin because she has seen my videos. Unfortunately, she has stopped learning and I do not know why she stopped.

How I inspire others?

Besides posting videos of my practice on Youtube, I also started a section on this website, Meet adult learners. In this section, I gather stories of adult learners and share them on this blog so that other adult learners do not feel lonely in their journeys. If you would like to share your stories and your why, please answer some questions on this form. I hope that you will help inspire other adult violin/fiddle learners out there.
